Louise Farrenc (1804—1875) Piano Quintets — The Schubert Ensemble

Wikipedia писал(а):

Louise Farrenc (31 May 1804 – 15 September 1875) was a French composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher.

Nigel Clough (Amazon) писал(а):

Two superb works that will hook you straight away. These quintets have quickly become favourites of mine, the Vivace from the second quintet in particular is hard to get out of my head! The playing of the Schubert Ensemble is faultless as the piano weaves its way around and between the strings. Until quite recently Louise Farrenc was a forgotten composer: now her compositions are gaining some deserved recognition. If you're not convinced then look her up on YouTube...

Nigel Clough (Amazon)
Chris Ingres (YouTube) писал(а):

...brilliant rendition of one of my favorite pieces of chamber music. both quintets are so enormously rich and beautiful! and you play this so very well: perfect balance, flawless intonation, full of power and joy, the piano like a sparkling creek flowing in-between!

Arthur Foote (1853—1937) Piano Trios — Arden Trio

Wikipedia писал(а):

Arthur William Foote (March 5, 1853 in Salem, Massachusetts – April 8, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts) was an American classical composer.

ClassicsToday писал(а):

Even though American composer Arthur Foote (1853—1937) lived well into the 20th century, his music is definitely a product of 19th century Romanticism, particularly German Romanticism. This isn’t to say his music is derivative, but it does hark back to modes established by Mozart, Schumann and Brahms...

Jeffrey Lehman (Amazon) писал(а):

Beautiful, intimate, pieces. Excellent performances.

I have all 3 volumes of Arthur Foote's chamber music on Naxos, and consider all three to be wonderful, but this disc is the best of the three.

Foote's music was not groundbreaking, radical or new, but what he did, he did well. The result, classical music that will delight people who want a classical music experience...

A Marvellous Introduction to Chamber Music

Many lovers of classical music are still unfamiliar with chamber music. They have difficulty listening to the seemingly "sparse" instrumentation and "thin" coloration. If they give themselves a chance, they will learn their objections are based on illusions. Chamber music has depths and qualities that simply cannot be achieved symphonically.

A good form for making the transition to the world of chamber music is the piano trio: piano, violin, cello; or (as in the case of this recording) piano, violin, viola. The presence of the piano supplies a more symphonic texture than strings alone would, and is more comforting for many beginning listeners, yet is equally rewarding for mature chamber music lovers.

<...>

Ignaz composed in a style reflecting the bright clarity of classicism with the new passion of romanticism. These trios are prime examples of this bridging music, filled with lovely flowing melodies, some so "right" you will immediately think of them as old, valued friends; others so full of life, they will make you want to laugh outloud in pleasure.

Так называемая сложная музыка (без кавычек) при знакомстве представляет впечатление странное — совершенное музыкальное разнообразие не даёт настроиться на что-то привычное и следовать ему ("moment when the grateful listener can lay anchor, as it were, happy to pause among such a kaleidoscopic interplay of ideas", Bryce Morrison, Gramophone), однако то тут, то там возникающие (и исчезающие) намёки на нечто приводят к тому, что остаётся желание вернуться к этой странно-особой музыке переходного между романтизмом и модернизмом периода. Статья в Википедии объёмная, здесь приводятся ключевые фрагменты, которых, впрочем, тоже достаточно. Сложность в основном относится к квинтетам, ниже будут приведены дополнительные цитаты.

Wikipedia писал(а):

Gabriel Urbain Faure (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers.

Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Faure composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.

Faure's music has been described as linking the end of Romanticism with the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century. The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which describes him as the most advanced composer of his generation in France, notes that his harmonic and melodic innovations influenced the teaching of harmony for later generations. In contrast with the charm of his earlier music, his works from the last twenty years of his life are sometimes elusive and withdrawn in character, and at other times turbulent and impassioned.

...Faure's later works do not display the easy charm of his earlier music: "the luscious romantic harmony which had always been firmly supported by a single tonality, later gave way to a severely monochrome style, full of enharmonic shifts, and creating the impression of several tonal centres simultaneously employed."

Gabriel Faure — Piano Quartets — Schubert Ensemble
1:04:32

Цитата:

Two quartets, each the length of a symphony, with all the variations in mood and pace to be expected in works of this length. The quartets provide a continuous flow of sound with hardly a break for breath for the artists who perform with even, mutual sympathy... All the artists have their turn including the viola which too often has to take a back seat when it comes to "accompanied" obligati in such works.

The compositions are in classical sonata form with the subjects clearly presented and their treatments easy to follow and enjoy in every movement. First class in every way..

Jack L. Honigman (Amazon)

Цитата:

Faure's Piano Quartets are full of wonderful tunes in a continuous flow of melody.. I am particularly fond of the Adagio in the First String Quartet. The two works are closely related and have some complex rhythms.

Wantage (Amazon)

This is wonderful, life-enhancing, intensely heart-felt music which should be in every collection, as should Faure’s Piano Quintets... Detailed Review by Brian Wilson (Music Web)

Вместе с замечаниями вида "They are quite difficult to listen to" (Schubert Ensemble violinist Simon Blendis) и "Such complexity has baffled many listeners, and it is true that both works (particularly the Second Quintet) release their meaning and fragrance only with repeated listening." (Bryce Morrison, Gramophone) есть и следующий, например, отзыв от начинающего поклонника классической музыки.

Цитата:

Faure a New Pleasure

I was not familiar with Gabriel Faure before... I was having a particularly stressful day and I put this in on as a lark, to break the string of constant irritations I was experiencing thus far that morning. I was rewarded by responding to my muse with a delightful hour... of listening pleasure. <...> Because of the variety in this musical palette... this exceptional CD goes will with most of my daily moments, from contemplative reading, to working, from cooking to relaxing at the end of the day. The movements are as different from one to the other as foie gras is from chocolate, but each delicious in their own right. <...> If you're not familiar with Faure, you are certain to find something delightful in this recording. <...> I've only just begun my "Classical" music journey and found this CD easy to relate to and door opening all the same.

The piano trio was almost entirely neglected in France before Lalo's three contributions to the genre [in the 1850s]. They possess an integrity of spirit and contain many sublime moments. The exquisitely heartfelt playing of the Trio Salomon... convey every emotional nuance of the second Trio's Andante... making them convincing advocates of these all too rarely heard works.
