This study aimed to evaluate the ability of the health food supplement Cordyceps sinensis (CS) to ameliorate suppressive effects of chemotherapy on bone marrow function as a model for cancer treatment. Mice were treated with Taxol (17 mg/kg body wt) one day before oral administration of a hot-water extract of CS (50 mg/kg daily) that was given daily for 3 weeks. White blood cell counts in peripheral blood of mice receiving Taxol were at 50% of normal levels on day 28 but had recovered completely in mice treated with CS. In vitro assays showed that CS enhanced the colony-forming ability of both granulocyte macrophage colony forming unit (GM-CFU) and osteogenic cells from bone marrow preparations and promoted the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells into adipocytes, alkaline phosphatase-positive osteoblasts, and bone tissue. This result could be attributed to enhanced expression of Cbfa1 (core binding factor a) and BMP-2 (bone morphogenetic protein) with concurrent suppression of ODF (osteoclast differentiation factor/RANK [receptor activator of NF-kappaB]) ligand. In summary, CS enhances recovery of mice from leukopenia caused by Taxol treatment. It appears to do so by protecting both hematopoietic progenitor cells directly and the bone marrow stem cell niche through its effects on osteoblast differentiation.

Cordyceps - A traditional Chinese medicine and another fungal therapeutic biofactory?
Paterson RR.
Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (IBB), Centre of Biological Engineering, Campus de Gualtar, University of Minho, 4710-057 Braga, Portugal.
Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are growing in popularity. However, are they effective? Cordyceps is not studied as systematically for bioactivity as another TCM, Ganoderma. Cordyceps is fascinating per se, especially because of the pathogenic lifestyle on Lepidopteron insects. The combination of the fungus and dead insect has been used as a TCM for centuries. However, the natural fungus has been harvested to the extent that it is an endangered species. The effectiveness has been attributed to the Chinese philosophical concept of Yin and Yang and can this be compatible with scientific philosophy? A vast literature exists, some of which is scientific, although others are popular myth, and even hype. Cordyceps sinensis is the most explored species followed by Cordyceps militaris. However, taxonomic concepts were confused until a recent revision, with undefined material being used that cannot be verified. Holomorphism is relevant and contamination might account for some of the activity. The role of the insect has been ignored. Some of the analytical methodologies are poor. Data on the "old" compound cordycepin are still being published: ergosterol and related compounds are reported despite being universal to fungi. There is too much work on crude extracts rather than pure compounds with water and methanol solvents being over-represented in this respect (although methanol is an effective solvent). Excessive speculation exists as to the curative properties. However, there are some excellent pharmacological data and relating to apoptosis. For example, some preparations are active against cancers or diabetes which should be fully investigated. Polysaccharides and secondary metabolites are of particular interest. The use of genuine anamorphic forms in bioreactors is encouraged.

Traditional Chinese interventions for stable angina.
Zheng Jie, Li Jin, Liu Guanjian, Chen Xiaoyan, Wang Qin, Ni Juan, Wei Jiafu, Duan Xin, Zhou Likun
Background: Traditional Chinese medicines have been used by more and more physicians for its anti-angina properties. But their anti-angina properties and adverse effects should be systematically reviewed.
Objectives: To assess the effect (harms and benefits) of traditional Chinese medicines for stable angina. Specific comparisons will be made between traditional Chinese medicine and current standard treatment regimen.
Methods: We hand-searched about 60 kinds of Chinese traditional medicine journals, and also searched the Cochrane Heart Review Group trials register, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, MEDILINE (1995 to 2003), EMBASE (1995 TO 2003), CBM (Chinese biomedical database, 1995 to 2003), Chinese Cochrane Centre Controlled Trials Register (to 2003), and Cochrane Library (to 2003). We also searched databases of undergoing trials in Current Controlled Trials (www.controlled-trials.com), and The National Research Register (www.update-software.com/National/nrr-frame.html). Still we contacted manufacturers and researchers in this field.
Randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials comparing traditional Chinese medicine with other anti-angina drugs, placebo or no intervention, and comparison among different doses or routes of administrations of traditional Chinese medicine, and any adverse effects are included in our review.
Two reviewers independently assessed trial quality and extracted data. Study authors were contacted for additional information. Results: Twenty-one trials involving 1772 people were included in out review. (1)Symptom relief: Six trials involving 562 people compared traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with routine therapy. Compared with routine therapy, TCM can significantly relieve the angina symptom (total odds ratio 5.90, 95% confidence interval 3.29 to 10.57). (2)ECG improvement: It was documented in twelve trials involving 1147 people, showing that TCM improve the ECG measurement better than routine therapy (total odds ratio 2.89, 95% confidence interval 2.24 to 3.72). (3)We particularly assessed effectiveness of composite Dansheng droplet pills: As one of the most common used TCM, composite Dansheng droplet pills and its effects and adverse reactions were also reviewed. Five trials involving 575 people, comparing composite Dansheng droplet pills with routine therapy and other TCM, showed that it could relieve the angina symptom (odds ratio 5.52, 95% confidence interval 3.07 to 9.90). Seven trials showed that Composite Dansheng droplet pills had significantly less adverse reactions caused by vasodilatation (e.g. headache, flush) (odds ratio 0.03, 95% confidence interval 0.01 to 0.09). However, based on four trials involving 475 people, the slight gastrointestinal reactions were more common with Composite Dansheng droplet pills than other routine therapies (odds ratio 5.62, 95% confidence interval 1.24 to 25.38).
Conclusions: Traditional Chinese interventions appear to be more effective than routine therapies in both reliving the angina symptoms and improving ECG measurements of angina patients. As to the adverse reactions, TCM seems have much less headache and flush caused by vasodilatation.

Factor analysis of traditional Chinese medicine syndromes in 815 patients with unstable angina.
Article in Chinese. Wang J, He QY, Li HX, Fang YT.
Department of Cardiology, Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing 100053, China.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the laws of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes in unstable angina, and to establish the preliminary diagnostic criteria for TCM syndromes. METHODS: Multi-center prospective research on TCM syndromes in 815 cases of unstable angina was done with the nonlinear dimension reduction by factor analysis. RESULTS: There were five extracted factors in factor analysis: F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5. F1 was yin deficiency of heart and kidney, F2 was deficiency of both heart and spleen, F3 was intermingled phlegm and blood stasis, F4 was qi deficiency and blood stasis, and F5 was yang deficiency and coagulated cold. Qi deficiency and blood stasis (F4) syndrome accounted for the maximum proportion. The diagnostic criteria for TCM syndromes were preliminarily and respectively established. CONCLUSION: Qi deficiency and blood stasis is the key factor of pathogenesis. The factor analysis can help us classify traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and establish the preliminary diagnostic criteria.

A study of relation between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and blood stasis – the effect of acupuncture promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis.
Sun Z.
Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Changzheng Hospital, Shanghai.
In this article, the clinical 31 cases patients with Rheumatoid artritis (RA) were observed and animal experiments were carried out on RA model rats and the treatment of acupuncture with combination of the different points was adopted. It was found that most of the 31 cases of RA patients had the signs of bloods stasis and abnormal hemorheology, statistical analysis indicated that there were significant differents between RA patients and healthy person. Red and swelling in joints of four limbs, ear and tail, clubbed toes, abnormal hemorheology, high in blood platelet aggregation and so on were found in model rats of RA, statistically, sinificant differents also exist between model rats of RA and healthy rats. The above indesexes in patients and model rats of RA were significantly improved after acupuncture treatment, which suggested that (1) there be a close relation between RA and blood stasis. (2) acupuncture play a role of promoting blood circulation to remove blood statis. (3) examination of hemorheology may be one of standards that development of RA and curative effect.

Fu TT, Wu JY, Wang L, Ma Y, Wang Y, Liu Y, Ding H.
Department of Pharmacology, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430072, China.
OBJECTIVE: To study on the various proportions of Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, Cortex Phellodendri, Fructus Cnidii and pericarp of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim in the formulas, whose antimicrobial effects on E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and C. albicans under different pH values were compared in vitro. METHODS: According to Chinese ancient proved recipe, the K-B method and plate diluting method were adopted to measure antimicrobial activity, and orthogonal design to ascertain the herbal formula in vitro. Finally, murine models were established to test the antimicrobial activity in vivo through vaginal membrane irritancy experiment, negative rate of pathogeny and pathological grade of vaginal membrane. RESULTS: The results suggested that formulas with different proportions of the herbs had diverse antimicrobial activities, and the effect was shown to be most obvious when one milliliter drug contains 100 microl Fructus Cnidii-pericarp of Zanthoxylum bungeanum (2:1) co-extracted volatile oil and 50 microl Radix Sophorae Flavescentis and Cortex Phenodendri ethanol extraction respectively under pH6. The antimicrobial effect of the formula, which hardly had any membrane irritancy, was better than Jie Eryin in vitro and vivo. CONCLUSION: The fromula has few components and better effect, and adaptation to the pH value of vaginitis. It is a promising alternative for gynecological diseases.
